A delegation of government officials from Changzhou, China, have visited Wyndham to sign an agreement to develop economic, trade and cultural ties.
On Monday 13th November, 2017, Wyndham City Acting Mayor, Cr Kim McAliney, signed a Letter of Intent to establish a Friendship City Relationship between the two Cities.
Wyndham City’s Future Focused Economy portfolio holder, Cr Walter Villagonzalo, said the agreement could have economic benefits for Wyndham.
“Changzhou is a major economic hub and is located near the most populated city in the world, Shanghai. It has been ranked by Forbes as the ninth best business City in mainland China,” Cr Villagonzalo said.
“With a population of more than 5 million people, Changzhou is considered a birthplace of modern industry in China. It has an annual GDP of more than $11.4 billion dollars and is an important industrial centre for technology, textiles, food processing and engineering.”
“It’s great that we were able to host this delegation of government officials from Changzhou and exciting to see a Letter of Intent to establish a Friendship City Relationship signed by both parties.”
“The agreement states that both sides will work to promote economic cooperation and trade, focusing specifically on the tourism, science, business and technology.”
“While we may be separated by more than 8000 kilometres, there is a great deal that we can learn and gain from each other. Wyndham is a rapidly growing area that needs to look beyond our own borders to develop a City with the economic opportunities to support our future.”
“Council will now actively work to explore ways that this new relationship can benefit the residents of Wyndham, whether it be through investment in our local economy, the establishment of trade agreements or the launch of cultural, sporting and educational networks.”
